Good hardscape starts below the surface: a compacted aggregate base, edge restraints that keep pavers from creeping outward, and grading that moves water away from the house instead of pooling on the patio. Done right, a paver patio or flagstone path should still sit flat and tight ten winters from now.

Most hardscape in Sonoma goes down on flat ground. The city sits on the valley floor at the south end of Sonoma Valley, and the lots in and around the Plaza are level. That sounds like the easy version. It is not, it is just a different problem. On a flat lot there is nowhere for water to go on its own, so the patio has to be built with the fall designed into it. We set the slope away from the house and out to somewhere that can take it, because the alternative in a Sonoma winter is a puddle that sits on your stone for days.
Under the surface it is clay. Valley floor soil here holds water through the wet months, then dries out and shrinks through a long rainless summer. That movement is what wrecks a thin base. It does not crack the pavers, it lips the joints and dishes the low spots, and by the third or fourth year you can feel it under a chair leg. Freeze and thaw is not the enemy in Sonoma, the winters are too mild for that. Moisture in clay is. So the base goes in deeper than a flat lot looks like it needs, compacted in lifts, with edge restraints so nothing creeps outward over time.
The other thing we work around here is trees. The older blocks in town have mature valley oaks with roots running shallow and wide, and those roots are usually closer to your future patio than anyone expects. We keep cuts out of the root zone where we can, float the grade instead of trenching through it, and pitch the surface so summer runoff drains away from the trunk rather than toward it, because a valley oak that gets watered all summer is a valley oak in trouble. Older properties near the Plaza also come with tight access: narrow side yards, a gate the machine will not fit through, alleys. On those jobs base rock and stone move by wheelbarrow, and we plan that into the schedule instead of discovering it on day one.
On permits, requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the first thing to sort out in Sonoma is which one you are in. A Sonoma mailing address is not always inside the city limits, and the Springs, El Verano and Glen Ellen are unincorporated county. Inside the limits that is the City of Sonoma building department. Outside them it is Permit Sonoma, the county's permitting agency. Work that raises structures, adds a wall, or changes how water leaves the site is what typically gets reviewed. 01 Why do paver patios go uneven on Sonoma's valley floor?
Clay moving under a base that was too thin. Sonoma soil takes on water all winter and shrinks through the dry summer, and a shallow base rides that movement. You do not see cracked stone, you see lipped joints and shallow dishes that catch water. The fix is depth and compaction: base rock placed in lifts and compacted properly, plus edge restraints so the field cannot creep outward. Mild winters mean freeze and thaw is not the issue here. Water in clay is.
02 Can you build a patio under a valley oak?
Usually yes, with care. Sonoma's older blocks have mature oaks with wide, shallow root systems, so we keep excavation out of the root zone where we can and float the grade rather than trench through it. We also pitch the surface so runoff drains away from the trunk, because valley oaks do poorly with summer water at the base. Roberto looks at the canopy and the roots before laying out the patio, not after.
03 My lot is flat with no drainage. Where does the water go?
We design the fall into the patio. On a level Sonoma lot nothing drains by accident, so the surface gets a deliberate pitch away from the house and out to a point that can take the water, with a drain line if the yard has no natural outlet. This is the part that separates a patio that stays dry through a wet January from one that holds a puddle for days.
04 What if my crew cannot get equipment into the backyard?
We do it by hand and price it honestly. A lot of older properties near the Plaza have narrow side yards, alley access, and gates too tight for a machine, so base rock and stone move by wheelbarrow. That adds labor, not compromise, and we build it into the written estimate up front instead of raising it midway through the job.
