A fence in Santa Rosa lives or dies at the bottom of the post hole. Most of this city sits on clay. From November through April that clay takes on water and swells, and it grips a post hard enough to lift it. Through the dry months it shrinks back, and by September there is often a visible gap between the concrete and the soil around it. Do that ten years running to a post set too shallow and you get the leaning fence line you see all over the older parts of town. We set posts deeper than the ground looks like it needs, bell the bottom of the hole so the footing cannot be pulled straight up, and crown the concrete so water sheds off the collar instead of standing on the post.
That clay also decides when we dig. In the wet season a hole in Santa Rosa clay fills with water and the walls smear closed; in late summer the same ground is hard enough to stall an auger. Spring and fall dig cleanest. It is also why gates here move with the season: a gate hung tight in February can bind in August, so we hang for the swing and set the hardware where it can be adjusted later.

02 Why do fences lean in Santa Rosa?
Shallow posts in expansive clay. The clay under most of this city swells when it soaks up winter rain and shrinks back through the dry season, and that yearly movement works a short footing loose a little at a time until the line goes crooked. The answer is depth and shape: a hole deep enough for the soil profile, belled at the bottom so the footing resists being lifted, and concrete crowned at the top so water sheds off the post instead of sitting against it. Rot at the ground line finishes off what the clay starts, so how the collar is finished matters.
03 How tall does a fence need to be to keep deer out?
Taller than a standard yard fence, and it depends on where your line sits. Properties on the east and south sides of Santa Rosa that back onto Trione-Annadel, Spring Lake, Howarth Park, or the slopes under Taylor Mountain get real, regular deer pressure, and a typical privacy fence height does not stop them. Coverage matters as much as height, since deer look for the low spot or the gap at a gate or a slope break.
